As the successor to the 20-franc “Helvetia”, the first “Gold Vreneli” were minted in 1897. The name of the coin is derived from “Verena”, the female embodiment of Switzerland - like Marianne in France and Lady Liberty in the United States - who can be seen on the motif side of the coin. Officially, the currency is called “Helvetia” or “Tête d'Helvetia”. These gold coins were a means of payment with a face value of CHF 20 and were minted in the millions. Today, the “Gold Vreneli” is known and appreciated worldwide. It is one of the most popular investment coins, not least thanks to its size and flexibility when buying and selling. The gold Vreneli has a purity of 900/1000 and a net weight of 5.8 grams.
The design of the gold coin
On the motif side, Verena, the female personification of Switzerland, is depicted with braided hair, looking to the left. Her collar is adorned with edelweiss flowers and the Swiss Alps can be seen behind her. Above Verena is the name “Helvetia”, which refers to the Latin name of Switzerland “Confoederatio Helvetia”.
The value side of the coin depicts the Swiss cross (the classic symbol of the Swiss Confederacy) and an oak branch. The year of issue is shown at the bottom of the face, with the mint mark to the right: “B” for Bern, “AB” and “BB” for Strasbourg, “B.” for Brussels and “A” for Paris. In 1945, 1946 and 1947, a total of around 20 million Vrenelis from 1935 were minted. These coins can be recognized by the mintmark “L” to the left of the year of issue.
