The Perth Mint was opened on June 20, 1899 at the height of the gold rush in Western Australia. Over the next three decades, it played a significant role in the rapid development of Western Australia's economy, refining gold and minting 106 million sovereign coins. With its outstanding reputation for quality, craftsmanship and efficiency, the mint produced large quantities of Australian circulation currency between 1940 and 1984. In 1986, the Perth Mint returned to its original purpose as a producer of fine gold coins. Since then, the Australian Kangaroo, originally known as the Australian Nugget, has enjoyed worldwide recognition and success. Later additions to the official Australian precious metal coin program include the Australian Kookaburra and the Koala, both of which are highly sought after by investors and collectors of silver coins.

The proof (PF) finish is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate methods of producing a coin. The Perth Mint's Kangaroo gold coin is strictly limited with a worldwide mintage of only 500 pieces and is supplied in the original coin case and numbered certificate of authenticity.

The design of the gold coin

The design side of the coin shows a kangaroo, a koala and a kookaburra, reflecting the mint's best-known animal motifs. The animals are artistically arranged between a depiction of the gold acacia, Australia's national flower emblem. The inscription “1899 THE PERTH MINT 2024” is located on a scroll at the foot of the motif. In addition to the mintmark “P125”, which stands for the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint, the design side also contains the weight, purity and year of the coin. The value side of the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III. Around the portrait is the inscription “CHARLES III” and the country of origin “AUSTRALIA”. The face value “100 DOLLARS” is also shown below the portrait.
