The “gschneizt & kampelt” series: Four lovingly designed motifs showcase the diversity of traditional Austrian attire. The festive dirndl, stylish lederhosen, elegant loden cloth and elaborately crafted horn buttons represent traditional materials, craftsmanship and Austrian folk costume culture. The fourth and final coin in the series is dedicated to horn – one of the most traditional natural materials, closely associated with traditional clothing, nature and craftsmanship for centuries.

Horn has a long tradition in Austrian folk costume culture. As a natural and regionally available raw material, it has been fashioned into buttons, decorative applications, jewellery and elaborate ornaments for generations. Horn buttons in particular continue to shape the characteristic appearance of many traditional jackets, waistcoats and lederhosen. Yet they have long served more than merely a practical purpose: elaborately worked and sometimes embellished with intricate carvings, they bear witness to craftsmanship, patience and a special appreciation for natural materials. Horn therefore combines functionality and aesthetics in a unique way. Its use also reflects a close connection with nature and the ability to transform a natural raw material into durable and individual decorative elements.  The mintage is limited to 30,000 pieces. The coin is presented in an illustrated blister pack containing information in German.

The design of the silver coin

The motif side depicts a man wearing traditional attire, whose appearance is accentuated by elaborately designed horn elements. In particular, the buttons on his waistcoat and the details of his traditional coat reflect the centuries-old tradition of horn craftsmanship. In the background, a decorative ornament inspired by intricate horn carving frames the motif. At the centre of the ornament is the head of a majestic stag – a symbol of the wildlife of the Alpine region and, at the same time, a typical source of inspiration for traditional costume motifs. The coin design itself therefore combines nature and craftsmanship in a distinctive way. The finely detailed structures of the traditional clothing, horn decorations and ornamental background are particularly well highlighted by the Special Uncirculated finish without additional colour application.
