This exclusive 1 oz silver coin is part of the “Australia at Night” coin series. It features some of Australia's most fascinating nocturnal animals. The eighth edition of the series is dedicated to the Australian flying fox (Megachiroptera).
Flying foxes are closely related to bats and differ from their relatives only in the shape of their snout and their large eyes, as unlike bats they do not use ultrasound for orientation but rely on their large eyes. Around 200 species of flying fox are known worldwide, which are native to Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania.
The coin is made of 999 fine silver and looks particularly impressive thanks to its black proof background. The extraordinary silver coin is produced in the highest minting quality “proof” and is strictly limited with a worldwide mintage of only 1,000 pieces. The proof quality (PP) is particularly coveted by collectors and is one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. This eye-catching silver coin is supplied in the original coin case with accompanying certificate of authenticity.
The design of the silver coin
The motif shows a flying fox hanging upside down from a branch. In the background, two other flying foxes can be seen in the same position, while another specimen is depicted flying in front of the full moon. Also included on the design side is the inscription “AUSTRALIA AT NIGHT - FLYING FOX”. The reverse shows the official coat of arms of the issuing country Niue as well as the inscriptions “ONE DOLLAR”, “1OZ 999 SILVER” and the year of issue “2023”.
