Design of the coin

The coin series is inspired by ancient symbols of power and identity. On the design side, the York bull was chosen as the shield holder for the royal coat of arms of York.

The Black Bull of Clarence is a York beast that came to the aid of Edward IV, the first English king from the House of York and one of the key figures in the Wars of the Roses. Edward IV is said to have often used the bull as a symbol, as did his brother Richard III, the last King of York.

The obverse of the coin shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Around the portrait is the inscription “D G REG F D”, which means Dei Gratia Regina, Fidei Defensor (Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith). There is also the face value and the letters “JC” in small letters for the designer of the coin, Jody Clark.
