Coins with niobium cores are a specialty from Austria and unique in their kind. The series of silver niobium coins presents colorful and creative coins on current scientific topics. Without the living organisms in the soil, the edaphon, nothing works. These microorganisms, bacteria, worms, fungi, insects and earthworms are essential for soil fertility and therefore for our food production. The edaphon breaks down organic matter and thus ensures the cycle of life. It produces humus, which provides plants with nutrients, protects the soil from erosion, stores water and balances out temperature fluctuations. However, the edaphon is under threat. Climate change can lead to humus depletion and soil dehydration, while heavy rainfall events can erode the soil. The sealing of natural soil destroys the edaphon and its functions. In Austria, 11.5 hectares of soil are used every day, 50% of which is built on.

The design of the coin
The motif side of the coin shows a mole at the top, an earthworm on the left, a snail at the bottom and an ant above. The niobium core shows a leaf at the top and three other important organisms below: a fungus mycelium on the left, a beetle on the right and an earthworm at the top.
The five factors that make up the soil are gathered together on the value side of the niobium core: At the top left, the factor of time, then - counterclockwise - mineral material, the climate, the soil organisms using the example of a snail shell, then - already in the silver ring - the relief of the landscape. In the center you can see a root from which a plant is growing, its leaves protruding into the silver ring.
